Dealing with smoke tainted grapes and wine – Don’t panic!

After the recent fires, vintage plans are in disarray with many growers and winemakers disturbed by the risk of smoke taint.

Decisions to delay or cancel grape-harvesting may be most pragmatic but are the most damaging when made in haste or based on fear and poor information.

Since 2003, our understanding of smoke taint has grown considerably. While far from complete, valuable research has been done and techniques have been developed to minimise the effects on wine.
